1. Test Sections


The following sections are assessed during the certification exam:
  • Discipline – the candidate's adherence to discipline, rules of conduct in the Dojo, and the principles of Budo
  • Kihon Te-waza – standing punches
  • Kihon Geri-waza – standing kicks
  • Ido Te-waza – moving punches
  • Ido Geri-waza – moving kicks

2. Kihon Te-waza: Technique of punching while standing still


Performed in the Kamae fighting stance, 10 repetitions in a row, first in a left-handed stance, then in a right-handed stance.

All strikes are executed in an accented manner, accompanied by the exhalation of the sound formula "SEI!"

  • Straight punch with the hand closest to the opponent (hereinafter referred to as the near hand) to the upper level (Jab Jodan)
  • Straight punch with the near hand to the middle level (Jab Chudan)
  • Straight punch with the hand farthest from the opponent (hereinafter referred to as the far hand) to the upper level (Sutoreto Jodan)
  • Straight punch with the far hand to the middle level (Sutoreto Chudan)
  • Side punch with the near hand to the upper level (Oi Fukku Jodan)
  • Side punch with the near hand to the middle level (Oi Fukku Chudan)
  • Side punch with the far hand to the upper level (Gyaku Fukku Jodan)
  • Side punch with the far hand to the middle level (Gyaku Fukku Chudan)
  • Bottom punch with the near hand to the upper level (Oi Appa Jodan)
  • Bottom punch with the near hand to the middle level (Oi Appa Chudan)
  • Bottom punch with the far hand to the upper level (Gyaku Appa jodan)
  • Bottom strike with the far hand to the middle level (Gyaku Appa chudan)
  • Alternating elbow strikes with both hands, on one count – two strikes, starting with the near hand, to the upper level (Mawashi Hiji ate jodan).

Brown and black belt rank candidates additionally perform, alternately, starting with the near hand, to the upper level, 10 repetitions:
  • Reverse roundhouse strike to the upper level with the near/far hand (Oi / Gyaku Uraken jodan)
  • Upward elbow strike with the near/far hand (Oi / Gyaku Age Hiji Ate)
  • Backward elbow strike with a turn to the upper level with the near/far hand (Oi / Gyaku Ushiro mawashi Hiji Ate jodan) with support on the palm of the other hand
  • Backward elbow strike with a turn to the upper level with the near/far hand (Oi / Gyaku Ushiro mawashi Hiji Ate jodan) in combat performance
  • Tetsui backfist with the far/near hand to the upper level (Gyaku / Oi Tetsui backfist jodan)

3. Kihon Geri-waza: Technique of kicking while standing still


When working from a frontal stance, strikes are delivered alternately, starting with the right leg.
All strikes are executed in an accented manner, accompanied by the exhalation of the sound formula "SAY!"

At an angle of 45˚ to the left, the turn is made on the command: “Hidari Mawate”, followed by the command: “Hidari zenkutsu dachi kamae-te”, which means to take the necessary stance to perform strikes
  • Straight Leg Forward Swing (Mae Keage) from a Deep Stance: With the Back Leg – 3 reps
  • Front Kick with the Back Leg to the High Level (Gyaku Mae Geri Jodan) – 10 reps
From zenkutsu dachi, hands on waist at sides. On the count of 10, switch to a right-sided stance.
  • Forward straight leg kick ("Mae Keage") from a deep stance: with the rear leg – 3 reps
  • Front kick with the rear leg to the top (Furonto Mae geri dzedan) – 10 reps
Frontally
  • Front kick forward (Mae geri) – 20 times
Starting with the right leg, alternately: 10 times at the middle level, 10 times at the top level. In both cases, keep your hands near your head, without a reverse swing.
  • Knee strikes (Hiza geri) – 30 times
10 times with a belt grip (side grip),
10 times with an imitation of a grab with hands behind the opponent’s head,
10 times with an imitation of a grab with hands behind the opponent’s neck and with a change of legs in a standing position.

At an angle of 45˚ to the left
  • Straight Leg Side Kicks (Yoko Geri Keage) – 10 times, alternately to the side, hands on the waist near the knot
  • Side Kick to the Mid-Level with the Edge of the Foot or Heel (Yoko Geri Chudan) – 10 times
  • Side Kick to the High Level with the Edge of the Foot or Heel (Yoko Geri Jodan) – 10 times
In both cases, the arms are at the head, without a reverse swing.
Frontally:
  • Roundhouse knee strike (Mawashi Hiza Geri), hands on the waist – 10 times
  • Roundhouse kick from the side with the shin or instep (Mawashi Geri):
to the lower level (gedan), hands on the waist near the knot – 10 times
to the body area (chudan), hands near the head – 10 times
to the head area (jodan), hands near the head – 10 times

At an angle of 45˚ to the left
  • Back kick with the heel of the foot (Ushiro geri) with a waist grip:
to the lower level (gedan) – 10 times
to the middle level (chudan) – 10 times
to the upper level (jodan), with a whip – 10 times
  • Side kick (chopping kick to the lower level) (Fumi geri) – 10 times
Frontally:
  • Forward Fumi-geri strikes – 20 times
  • Side foot sweep under the opponent's supporting leg (Ashi barai) – 30 times
  • Instep kick to the groin (Kin-geri), hands on the waist – 30 times

Those certified for brown and black belts additionally perform:

  • Overhead Heel Kick (Oroshi Kakato Geri) – 10 times
  • Inner Roundhouse Kick (Uchi Mawashi Geri) – 10 times
  • Forward Side Kick to the Middle Level (Mae Yoko Geri Chudan) – 10 times
  • Forward Side Kick to the Upper Level (Mae Yoko Geri Jodan) – 10 times
  • Reverse Roundhouse Kick (Ura Mawashi Geri) – 10 times
  • Reverse Roundhouse Kick with Turning (Ushiro Mawashi Geri) – 10 times

4. Ido Kihon – punches and kicks while moving


4.1. This section presents the full range of technical arsenal that black belt candidates must demonstrate.
4.2. When performing a combination, all strikes must be technically correct, rhythmic, and precise. Accented strikes are accompanied by the sound formula "SEI!" upon exhalation.
4.3. Applicants for apprenticeship ranks demonstrate a limited range of combinations (where possible):
4.2.1. Applicants for 10th–9th Kyu must perform only simple movements with single strikes;
4.2.2. Applicants for 8th–7th Kyu perform movements, single and double-strike combinations;
4.2.3. Applicants for 6th–5th Kyu perform movements, single, double, and triple-strike combinations;
4.2.4. Applicants for 4th Kyu and above perform techniques without restrictions.

All movements and combinations of up to two strikes are performed from both stances, moving forward and backward.
Series of three or more strikes are performed from the candidate's combat stance.
When performing four-strike combinations, first perform three repetitions of the entire sequence in place, counting to a count, and then, on counts of four to ten, perform them in motion.

4.5. Ido Geri-waza: Moving Kicks

Kicking Techniques from the Kamae Stance:
  • Mae Keage Geri – Moving forward kick
  • Hiza Geri – Knee Strike
  • Mae Geri – Forward Kick
  • Yoko Geri – Side Kick
  • Mawashi Geri – Roundhouse Kick (delivered in three stages)

All strikes are delivered to the top level for 10 counts with the front and back legs, the hands are kept in protection at the head, special attention is paid to balance, the return of the leg and the correct exit to the stance, as well as the correct execution of the turn in the formation on the command "Mawate".

4.6. Ido Mix: Combining Punches and Kicks While Moving

As a rule, a "two" is punched with the hands, but the examination committee may provide the examinee with the opportunity to choose punches (no more than 2 in a combination).

5. Nage-waza and Ne-waza: wrestling techniques


5.1. Applicants must perform self-breaks and throws with the audible "SEI!" exhalation.
5.2. Applicants with white belts must perform only breaks, both for self-defense and in cases of falling from a strike during sparring.
5.3. Applicants with yellow belts must be able to perform uchikomi (turns) from a static position, as well as basic attacking techniques on the ground.
5.4. Applicants with green belts and above must be able to perform throws while moving and demonstrate a variety of techniques and movements from different positions.
5.5. Applicants with brown belts must possess skills in free wrestling with painful and choking holds.
5.6. Ukemi (break)
10 kyu – self-protection when falling on the back, on the left/right side, and forward from a squat position, with the ability to return to the starting position: 3 times
9 kyu – self-protection when falling on the back, on the left/right side, and forward from a squat position with the ability to return to the starting position, the assistant pushes the candidate to set the acceleration: 3 times
8 kyu – forward roll with protection (legs in a cross position), special attention is paid to monitoring the correct position of the arms and legs after the fall: 5 times
7 kyu – Ebi ("shrimp move" or crawling out)

5.7. Nage-waza – Throws
Series of uchikomi (underthrows) must end with a final throw. The person being thrown performs ukemi (safety), which is also assessed during the exam.
6-5 kyu – uchikomi (undercut) techniques
Candidates must perform uchikomi with one of their chosen techniques, three times each.
Technique types:
  • Forward throws: Tai-otoshi (front leg sweep), Harai-goshi (leg sweep), etc.
  • Backward throws: O-soto-gari (grab), throwing the opponent by the leg with the far leg from the outside, O-soto-otoshi (rear leg sweep), etc. Others: Ouchi-gari (inside hook), Kosoto-gari (outside heel sweep), Kouchi-gari (inside sweep with the near leg), etc.
4-3 kyu and above – must know all of the above, but perform them while moving forward and backward, using the force of inertia to throw. One technical element moving forward, two technical elements moving backward (Kubinage, Seoi-nage, Tai-otoshi, Kouchi-gari, etc.)

5.8. Ne-vaza - parterre
Starting position: the assistant is below, the person being assessed is above, holding both hands on the assistant's knees
  • Knee kicks. Grabbing the opponent's knees from the inside, kicking them to the side, or passing through them, or pressing on the opponent's legs with your weight and passing the guard.
  • Pushing the opponent's knees and passing the guard. After pushing one knee, maintain the necessary control over both the opponent's legs and the other knee/leg over which the opponent's leg passes.
  • Holding the opponent's leg and passing the guard.
  • Straightening the opponent's legs downwards and passing the guard.
  • Passing the guard using a technique at the discretion of the person being assessed.
Note:
Certifiers perform the specified techniques one by one, using them to transition to mount.
6-5 kyu
Painful holds: Udo-hisigi-juji-gatame, Udo-garame, Ashi-kubi-jime, Hiji-jujo-gatame, Waki-gatame
Choke holds: Okuri-jime, Hadaka-jime, Juji-jime, Sankaku-jime
4-3 kyu
Implementation of grappling skills from the bottom position:
  • Escape a face-to-face position by using the "shrimp" motion, where the athlete applies a cross-body hold with a cross-grab of the far arm and body (yoko-shiho-gatame).
  • Demonstrate painful and choking techniques (sankaku, juji, shime) from the bottom position.
Brown and black belt candidates
Brown and black belt candidates demonstrate free grappling techniques: transitions from a standing position to the ground, performing a painful or choke hold, or control with a finishing move. Throwing techniques are demonstrated in one round (3 minutes).
For 3 minutes, candidates alternately perform three throws.
The candidate performing the throws must demonstrate mastery of various forward, backward, and sideways throws, as well as transitions to painful/choke holds and control with a finishing move after the throw.
Their partner demonstrates a self-protection technique.

6. Paddu-waza – exercises in pairs with boxing mitts and/or pads


This section is required for candidates achieving green belts and above. Both candidates in a pair are assessed simultaneously: both for their mastery of striking techniques on the pads or pads, and for their ability to position the pads or pads for an assistant's strike.
During the tasks in this section, one candidate holds the pads (pads), while the other delivers strikes as directed by the certification committee. The pair then switches.
The list of strikes and combinations is determined by the certification committee.

All tasks are performed for 30 seconds each, over a period of 3 minutes. After each round, the candidate switches places with the assistant.

Round 1:
  • Punches – 30 seconds;
  • Hands + knees – 30 seconds;
  • Kicks – 30 seconds;
  • Kicks + knees – 30 seconds;
  • Full Shinkudo striking technique – 1 minute

Round 2:
  • Full Shinkudo striking technique + throw followed by finishing moves (within Shinkudo rules), either by control, mount, submission, etc.

7. Yakusoku-kumite (exercises in pairs)


7.1. In this section, the candidate demonstrates mastery of striking technique and distance awareness while performing tasks in pairs, performing offensive and defensive actions.
7.2. Attack options are determined by the Certification Committee. The number of tasks is determined by the Admissions Committee.
7.3. When performing tasks, the candidate must perform all technical actions correctly, rhythmically, and precisely. Accented actions are accompanied by the sound formula "SAY!" upon exhalation.
7.4. Defense and counterattack against single attacks and attacks with combinations of up to 2 strikes
7.4.1. Three counts are performed for each action:
  • Defense against an attack with single basic punches or kicks;
  • Defense and counterattack against an attack with single basic punches or kicks;
7.4.2. The candidate demonstrates defense against an attack in accordance with their qualification.
For example,
  • at 10-9 Kyu, stances, blocks, and counters are performed;
  • at 8-7 Kyu, the above techniques are supplemented by dodges, dives, and deflections;
  • at 6-5 Kyu, the above techniques are supplemented by shifts, sidesteps, and other escapes from the line of attack;
  • applicants for higher belts demonstrate a full arsenal of defensive techniques.
7.4.3. A counterattack is performed with single strikes, as well as two-, three-, or more strike combinations, depending on the candidate's qualification.
7.4.4. A counterattack is not made directly, but is designated by the assistant.
7.4.5. The assistant does not block the counterattack.
7.5. Defense and counterattack against attacks with combinations of three or more strikes and other offensive actions
7.5.1. Only performed by candidates with a rank of 4th Kyu or higher.
7.5.2. Three counts are performed for each action.
7.5.3. The candidate demonstrates defense against an attack, transitioning to a counterattack with a combination of strikes and then transitioning to ground combat, in accordance with the qualification for which they are applying.
7.5.4. The counterattack is not made directly, but is designated by the assistant.
7.5.5. The assistant simulates elements of defense against a counterattack.
The difficulty of counterattacking increases with increasing skill level: white belts perform only defense, while blue belts and above add counterattacking to defense (e.g., defending against a jab, countering with a jab). Counterattacking increases in complexity depending on skill level. Black belt candidates must demonstrate defense against an attack, transitioning into a counterattack with a multi-punch combination, followed by an exit to the ground, ending with a painful hold or choke.

8. Self-defense – demonstration of the applied section in pairs


8.1. This section is required for candidates grading at the rank of brown belt and above.
8.2. The candidate demonstrates skills in applied self-defense techniques when attacked by an opponent armed with a bladed weapon or firearm, or who has applied a hold that restricts the candidate's movement, and also conducts a short duel against two opponents.
8.3. Attack variants are determined by the certification committee. The number of tasks is determined by the admissions committee. The candidate must demonstrate skills in defending and disarming from a knife attack, a stick attack, a pistol threat, and releasing from holds. The candidate demonstrates defense against an attack and a counterattack that results in the neutralization of the opponent. The assistant does not block the counterattack.

Examples of possible attack missions:
  • The assistant, standing in front of the candidate, attacks with a knife strike from below;
  • The assistant, standing behind the candidate, threatens with a pistol at point-blank range to the back;
  • The assistant grabs the clothing on the chest with one hand;
  • The assistant has secured the torso from behind, restraining the candidate's arms;
  • The assistant threatens with a pistol at point-blank range to the candidate's chest;
  • The assistant, standing in front of the candidate, attacks with a knife strike from above;
  • The assistant, standing in front of the candidate, threatens with a knife blade pressed against the opposite carotid artery from the front;
  • The assistant, standing in front of the candidate, strikes the candidate on the side of the head with a stick;
  • The assistant has secured the wrist of the opposite hand from the front;
  • An assistant, standing in front of the candidate, threatens the candidate with a pistol at point-blank range to the head;
  • An assistant, standing in front of the candidate, has a torso hold from the front, restraining the candidate's arms;
  • An assistant, standing in front of the candidate, attacks with a backhand knife strike;
  • An assistant, standing behind the candidate, grabs the candidate's shoulder with the opposite hand from behind;
  • An assistant, standing in front of the candidate, attacks with a knife strike directly to the chest;
  • An assistant, standing in front of the candidate, attacks with a blow to the head with a stick from above;
  • An assistant, standing in front of the candidate, has a torso hold from the front, not restraining the candidate's arms;
  • An assistant, standing in front of the candidate, attempts to remove a weapon from an inside pocket;
  • The assistant, standing in front of the candidate, attacks with a baton thrust to the chest;
  • The assistant, standing in front of the candidate, attacks with a knife strike from the side;
  • The assistant, standing in front of the candidate, attempts to draw a weapon from his trouser pocket;
  • The assistant, standing in front of the candidate, attacks with a backhand blow to the head with a baton;
  • The assistant grabs the clothing on the chest with both hands;
  • The assistant grabs the torso from behind, without restraining the candidate's arms;
  • The assistant, standing in front of the candidate, grabs the wrists with both hands;
  • The assistant, standing behind the candidate, grabs the neck with the shoulder and forearm from behind;
  • The assistant, standing in front of the candidate, grabs the throat with the fingers from the front.

After demonstrating defense against an attack, the candidate engages in a 30-second bout against two opponents simultaneously. The goal is to demonstrate effective countering of two or more opponents, including the use of movement, maneuvering, and technical arsenal.
Permitted and prohibited techniques comply with Shinkudo rules.

9. Fights


9.1. Qualification bouts are not competitive. Applicants must demonstrate their skills in fighting, developing combat tactics and strategy, and competently applying technical equipment in accordance with the qualification they are seeking.
9.2. The following rules are established to assess the applicants' fighting skills, developing combat tactics and strategy, and competently applying technical equipment.
9.2.1. Limited rules – apply to qualification bouts of kyu tests up to and including 3rd kyu.
  • The match is conducted using striking techniques in a standing position with elements of wrestling.
  • Any grappling strikes are prohibited.
  • Punches to the head are prohibited.
  • The restrictions stipulated by the Shinkudo rules for the relevant age group apply.
9.2.2. Shinkudo rules without wrestling on the ground – apply to kyu and dan test fights.
  • The match is conducted according to Shinkudo rules and is conducted using striking techniques while standing.
  • Ground fighting is prohibited.
  • Throws are permitted.
  • The restrictions stipulated by the Shinkudo rules for the relevant age group apply.
9.2.3. Tsukami-waza (work in a grip) rules are applied in dan-test matches, as well as kyu-tests for 2 and 1 Kyu.
  • The starting position is kamae;
  • Grabbing the upper or lower part of the form, or any part of the opponent's body not prohibited by the rules, is permitted;
  • The grip duration is 10 seconds.
  • Striking techniques are permitted only while gripped: elbows, knees, head, and kicks;
  • Other strikes while gripped are prohibited;
  • Throws are permitted;
  • Ground fighting is prohibited, although technical actions lasting up to 3 seconds are permitted to ensure the implementation of permitted ground striking techniques or control, including pinning;
  • The restrictions stipulated by the Shinkudo rules for the relevant age group apply.
9.2.4. Ne-waza (ground fighting) rules – apply to dan test matches.
  • Starting position: kneeling (seiza);
  • Painful and choking techniques are permitted;
  • Strikes to the body and thighs from the side are permitted.
9.3. Bouts last 1 minute.
9.4. All bouts are conducted in protective equipment as prescribed by the Shinkudo rules for the relevant age group. Additional protective equipment may be used for those being certified, at the discretion of the certification committee.
9.5. Bouts under different rules are conducted consecutively, with a break of at least 1 minute after every third bout. For example, for a dan test, the candidate competes in sequential rounds (Shinkudo → Tsukami-waza → Ne-waza) according to the following pattern:

Round 1 → Pause → Round 2 → Pause → Round 3 → Pause → Round 4

9.6. If a candidate is knocked out during a bout, their certification is suspended until the next test.
9.7. For documentation purposes, the following bout rules designations are used:
  • L – Limited Rules;
  • S – Shinkudo Rules;
  • T – Tsukami-waza Rules;
  • P – Ne-waza Rules.
9.8. The number of bouts in kyu tests is determined by age and the qualification the candidate is seeking:

9.10. At the discretion of the Admissions Committee, the rules for the candidate's final bout may be replaced with other rules stipulated by this program.
Bout results are recorded on the Bout Registration Sheet.

10. Physical condition


10.1. Push-ups with fists in a push-up position
  • Starting position: push-up position, fists shoulder-width apart, parallel to each other;
  • Bend and extend your arms through their full range of motion;
  • Elbows are kept close to your body;
  • The push-up involves your entire body, not just your upper body (torso): your heels, pelvis, and shoulders should be in a straight line.
10.2. Abdominal exercises
  • Starting position: lying on your back, hands on your shoulders or holding your jacket lapels, knees straight, heels touching the floor;
  • Raise your upper body until the plane intersects 90°.
10.3. Jump squats
  • Starting position: feet shoulder-width apart, arms crossed over your chest;
  • Keep your back straight during squats, look up and forward;
  • The squat is performed to a 90° angle at the knee joint, and upon rising, a jump is performed.
10.4. The following is not permitted:
  • Releasing the grip;
  • Stopping and skipping the count.
10.5. The number of exercises is determined by the age and qualifications of the person being assessed:

The table lists the number of push-ups, jumps, and sit-ups performed by the candidate in the order specified by the certification committee.
10.6. Those certifying for 10th–3rd kyu perform the exercises to a count determined by a member of the certification committee.
10.7. Those certifying for brown and black belts meet physical fitness standards using a separate program.
In three rounds (three minutes with a one-minute break), the candidate must complete the following number of push-ups, sit-ups (leg raises), and squats in accordance with the age-specific standards:

Adolescents aged 14–17, testing for brown belts, complete the standards in the same order, but the number of repetitions for each exercise is 70.

The test subject counts the number of repetitions, loudly announcing each completed 10.
10.8. Holders of GTO gold badges for their current age level are exempt from physical fitness standards.
10.9. Standards may be lowered depending on the test subject's health limitations and overall health.

11. Test on knowledge of competition rules


11.1. The Competition Rules assessment may be submitted orally or in writing.
11.2. By decision of the Certification Committee, the Competition Rules assessment may be submitted separately from the main part of the assessment – ​​on a separate day.
